Herpetofauna of Romania
Habitats from Romania are varied, starting from wild Carpathians, through highlands of Transylvania and Moldavia,through the dry steppes of Dobrogea and Baragan we reach the wonderful Danube Delta and ending in the Black Sea. This mosaic of habitats makes possible the coexistence of of 48 species of herpetology fauna, of which 6 species of newts, 11 species of frogs, 3 species of turtles, 11 species of lizard and 15 species of snakes.
Herpetofauna of Romania is one of the richest in Europe but is still among the least studied. Large areas have not yet been investigated and species distribution maps are missing or are incomplete, due to the low number of researchers and enthusiasts herpetologists.
